Childcare is often based in licensed premises, licensed facilities that offer care and education for children in age-specific groups often follow structured curricula and are regulated by government agencies. Ensuring the safety and well-being of children in their care, providing age-appropriate learning experiences and activities to support cognitive, social, and emotional development.

The childcare industry is a rewarding sector that plays a critical role in early childhood development and supports families in balancing work and childcare needs. It requires dedicated professionals who are committed to the well-being and education of young children.

City & Guilds Level 1 Award in Introduction to Health & Social Care (Adults & Children & Young People) Early Years and Childcare

This is an introductory course that should help you become aware of the challenges of working in a child care setting and provide you with the were the knowledge to start your career. You will become aware of the principles and values associated with child care and the health & safety requirements to protect young people in your care. This also extends to awareness of safeguarding and a knowledge of the range of service provision available in the sector.

City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Children’s Care, Learning & Development

This is a competence based qualification and provides you with a license to practice in the sector. If you want to work in child care then to achieve this qualification you must be in a workplace where you can demonstrate the skills that you must have to be successful. This includes safeguarding children and keeping them safe and well. It also includes supporting children’s personal care & nutrition, supporting play, learning & development, supports child development across stages and contributing to the support of children with disability and special needs.

Single Subject: Childcare can be chosen as a Single Subject within our youth provision ‘Skills for Life and Work’ programme. As a single subject your focus will solely be on enhancing and advancing your skills and knowledge within the industry with a range of Classroom and practical sessions weekly as well as sourcing and attending live immersive work experience allowing you to demonstrate your skills attained.

All SFLW programmes come with secondary elements, such as Essential Skills, Personal Development and Employment Rights and Responsibilities training.

BroadBase: BroadBase gives you the ability to sample several different Vocational areas within the ‘Skills for life and Work’ programme, within the BroadBase option you will be able to sample and develop a range of skills within the Childcare industry amongst 2 other vocational subject areas, before defining your single subject choice.

All SFLW programmes come with secondary elements, such as Essential Skills, Personal Development and Employment Rights and Responsibilities training.

Apprenticeship: Opportunities for all ages to enhance and advance their Skills in Childcare to Level 3 through the Department for Economies approved Apprenticeship 2021 programme.

Employed a minimum of 21 hours per week in a Childcare Role, then you can potentially be eligible for a training and development package within this programme.

Apprenticeships are also an evolvement from our BroadBase to Single Subject ‘Skills for Life and Work’ programme and a pathway encouraged for all programme participants.

There are 56,000 childcare places in Northern Ireland delivered by 334 day nurseries, 180 pre-schools and sessional creches, 3,900 active childminders and 240 out-of-school and holiday childcare providers.

This indicated the scale of Childcare services within Northern Ireland and the need to constantly develop and sustain the industry and its growth, the next generation of childcare specialists need to be developed, trained and ready to deliver effectively in line with minimum governmental standards and educational curriculum.
Childcare is an industry where a huge range of transferable skills are required, from strong interpersonal skills to caring and empathetic skills, as well being creative problem-solving, safeguarding, nurturing and developing motor skills and linguistic skills, the range of skills can be transferred across multiple industries once qualified in Childcare.

Our Essential Skills offer is extensive at Impact Training, we offer Literacy, Numeracy and Information Technology up to including Level 2.

Dependant on the course requirements all participants will be assessed for suitability of level of essential skills and we actively promote progression within the Essential Skills delivery model at Impact Training, our team of highly skilled tutors will always endeavour to support, challenge and develop a range of skills and attributes that will enhance the level of achievement of every participant, for more information on Essential Skills at Impact Training Click Here
Qualifications and work experience are essential components in our provision but there is much more to being a student at Impact Training. We are committed to raising aspirations in young people and trying to bring the best out of them. This will include introducing them to experiences outside of the curriculum and equipping them with the skills and values that will help to shape their future.



Through EVOLVE you will engage in a wide range of World of Work events that will introduce you to greater opportunities in your industry/sector. It will also allow you to support your community, expand citizenship, develop your physical and mental health, apply your essential skills to real activities, gain new skills, gain additional qualifications to improve wider career prospects and improve your personal development. All of this will be through events and activities arranged by our staff. All you have to do is enrol on the events and get involved.



Broadbase offers short courses in 3 subjects and the chance to specialise in the one that best suits your ambitions. Our Foundation Programme allows you to gain qualifications in year 1 and progress to higher qualifications in year 2. We also offer a wide range of enhancements to complement your experiences and to improve your chances of securing employment at the end of the programme. These include but are not limited to: CSR Cards, First Aid Courses, Food Hygiene, Customer Service Courses, Abrasive Wheels, Photography, Coding, VR Courses, Sign Language, additional Barbering & Hairdressing courses etc. Through the Employment Academy we can focus your final term on securing employment and Apprenticeship positions so you can move to the next stage of your career.
